Midweek Update: Community Groups

Dear Fourth Church Family,

Community Groups resume next week, and I’m thrilled to take a few minutes to discuss how the Lord has used these groups to foster friendship, discipleship, and prayer at Fourth. If you are seeking fellowship during this uncertain time, I invite you to join a community group in your neighborhood.

Please read on below for further info on the following:

  • This week and next we kick off fall classes and activities.
  • Today, September 9: 5:30 p.m., Congregational Prayer
  • Sunday, September 13:
    • Join us for worship. Reservations open each Wednesday morning for the Sunday to come.
    • 9:30 a.m., Children’s Church resumes.
    • 6:00 p.m., the Evening Service resumes.
  • Tuesday, September 15, 7:00 p.m., we start a new weekly program on the Doctrine of the Church, “Teaching on Tuesdays.”

Worship Services, Sunday, September 13

Communion at Evening Service
Communion will be served at the 6:00 p.m. service this Sunday, September 13, using prepackaged communion wafers and grape juice. Prepackaged gluten-free wafers will also be available.

  • All ages are welcome in Sunday worship services. For now there is no childcare during our worship services. Beginning this Sunday, September 13, there will be Children’s Church during the 9:30 a.m. outdoor service for children age 4 through 3rd grade. See details below.
  • Classes and activities are available for children, youth, and adults throughout the week.

Drive-Through Food Drive

Wednesday, September 16, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 19, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

The neighborhood and church are invited to contribute to a food and school supplies drive collected by Fourth Presbyterian Church Youth, in partnership with our Missions Local Outreach, which is distributing the supplies to our ministry partners: Clark Inn, a ministry of Samaritan Inns; the Rockville Women’s Center; the teen moms of YoungLives, a ministry of YoungLife; and, neighbors in the DMV.

Instructions

  • Mark your contributions FOOD DRIVE and place them in the trunk of your vehicle
  • Please wear a mask
  • Drive to the covered entrance on the Ridgefield Road side of the church. Note that the church building is closed and the food drive is set up outside.
  • Use the outer lane and remain in your car for safe social distancing
  • You will see tables set up for sorting donations
  • Release the trunk, and youth staff or volunteers wearing masks and gloves will unload your contribution.
  • September only, we are also collecting specific school supplies.

    Ministry Announcements

    Adult Sunday School

    Classes began last Sunday and continue through December 6. Weekly group meetings will take place online. Leaders will be in touch with dates, times, and meeting instructions. There is also an option to register for independent study. Visit the Adult Sunday School webpage for more information.

    Children’s Ministry

    Children’s Sunday School | Online lessons will resume September 13.

    Children’s Church | Begins September 13 during the 9:30 a.m. outdoor service. Children age 4 through 3rd grade will be dismissed before the sermon and will be accompanied by their teachers to the tent adjacent to the Upper Parking Lot.

    Preschool Story Time | Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. at the tent adjacent to the Upper Parking Lot.

    Bible Studies for 4th and 5th Graders | Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m., outside at the church. Begins tonight. For location, contact Marie.

    Community Groups

    Community Groups resume the week of September 13. We invite everyone who has not yet joined a community group to come build new friendships with us this fall. All groups meet for fellowship online by discussing the morning sermon, applying Scripture to our lives, and prayerfully sharing needs with one another. Find a group at 4thpres.org/groups.

    GriefShare Support Group

    Continues Thursdays through December 3, 1:00-3:00 p.m., online, registration ongoing. GriefShare is a 13-week video and sharing course on navigating through grief. The course is free of charge except for the cost of the workbook ($15.00). Register at griefshare.org.

    New Opportunities to SERVE

    Sunday School classes resume September 13. Our new curriculum is Compassion, the first study in Jill Miller’s Bethesda Series. Lessons will be via Zoom and will bring Scripture to life through reading, drawing, and role play.

    Women’s Ministry

    Women’s Cancer Support Group | We will meet virtually, Sunday, September 20, 2:30 p.m. If you have been recently diagnosed, in treatment, or in the stage known as NED (no evidence of disease), please join us for our monthly dose of encouragement and prayer! If you are new to our group, please contact Jean for a Zoom invitation.

    Fourth Circles | Our monthly neighborhood gatherings for women of all ages begin this month and will continue via Zoom until it’s safe to meet in person. Circles focus on friendship, prayer, and mentoring as women explore God’s Word together in a neighborhood near you. For more information or to join a circle, email Jean.

    Women’s Fall Bible Studies | Registration is now open for six Bible studies meeting via Zoom, September through November. We will study Hosea: A 12-Week Study (Knowing the Bible), by Lydia Brownback. Order your own study guide, available at this writing from Westminster Bookstore, Amazon.com, and Christianbook.com.

    Young Adults

    Young Adults (20-30s, single, or recently married) Sunday school class begins September 13, 10:45 a.m., in the Upper Room. We will broadcast the class via Zoom for those unable to join in person.
