The Lord’s Day, September 19

Dear Fourth Church,

Charles Wesley wrote “And Can It Be?”, our closing hymn for this morning, in the days just after his conversion. Subtitled “Free Grace” when first published in 1738, the text makes clear reference to passages such as Philippians 2 and 2 Corinthians 8:9 as it recounts the condescending love of Christ in effecting our rescue from sin.

Verse 2:

He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race;
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.

What a blessing to sing great hymns of the faith filled with Scriptural truth!

In this morning’s “Ministry Minute”, we’ll hear about a new ministry initiative called Mission DMV that’s all about loving and serving our neighbors in the region (DC, Maryland, and Virginia). We are just a few weeks away from the first Mission DMV Family Serve Day on October 16. Learn more and sign up at 4thpres.org/missiondmv.
